It definitely resembles some weird kind of bird or flying monster. They are pretty creepy, and it’s pretty easy to imagine how windstorms would have picked up broken umbrellas and made them fly through the sky like demon-possessed animals.

Even today you can find broken umbrellas all over the streets in Japan after a typhoon. I guess it was no different in the Edo period. They just had a more interesting description for them.

I can just see this yokai perched on someone’s roof just like in the picture.
