Today’s yokai is pretty interesting to me, because it is almost exactly the same as another phenomenon in British mythology known as St. Elmo’s fire (or will o’ the wisp). There’s something so interesting about two cultures, separated by about as far as you can possibly be on this planet, developing almost the same supernatural explanation. Today’s yokai is extremely well-known and popular in Japan, made famous by Mizuki Shigeru’s yokai stories. However, like many of Mizuki’s works, it has its history way back in the ghost stories of the Edo period. If we look back at the original monster scroll paintings that started the whole Edo period yokai mania, we’ll find that nurikabe has changed quite a bit from his original form to the cute character most people know today. Tonight is the night of one of the annual local festivals near my wife’s parents’ home. We always go there, visit her extended family, and then head to the local shrine where there are food stalls, game stalls, and tons of taiko drumming. Mixed with the perfect October air, the smell of the fragrant kinmokusei trees, and the secluded, rural, mountain valley shrine atmosphere, this is one magical night. Today’s yokai was inspired by that festival. Hope you enjoy it! |

今日は私の妻の家の近くでお祭りがありました。私たちは毎年その祭りに行って親戚に会い、神社にお参りに行ってゲームや食べ物の屋台を訪れたり迫力のある太鼓のパフォーマンスを楽しんでいました。最高の１０月の雰囲気に金木犀の香り、田舎の山々や神社の厳かな雰囲気、どれをとっても素晴らしい風情があります。本日の妖怪はこのお祭りに影響を受け描いたものです。どうぞ楽しんでください！

Today’s yokai is not very well known, and I’m pretty sure this post will be the first time it has ever been translated into English. This one comes from very close to my hometown in Japan — it’s from Nanjo in the middle of Fukui prefecture, a very rural and mountainous area. The name is very confusing to me — it is written with the kanji for gecko (守宮, yamori), yet in this case the name is pronounced imori, which means newt. So written it implies that this is a gecko yokai, but spoken it sounds like a newt yokai, while in actuality it refers to a gecko yokai. The two animals look alike and are sometimes confused as it is without crossing their names like that. But I guess if it wasn’t strange, it wouldn’t be a proper yokai, right? | 今日の妖怪はそんなに知られていない物だと思います。そのため多くの人はこの妖怪の英語の説明を見た事がないかもしれませんね。
今回の妖怪は私のいる地域にとても近い南条（現在の南越前町）にまつわる妖怪です。この妖怪の名前にはちょっと混乱しました。漢字では守宮（ヤモリ）ですが、今回のケースでは「いもり」と発音するのです。漢字表記上はヤモリの妖怪のようで、発音上はイモリの妖怪のようになるという不思議な感じですが、本来はヤモリの妖怪を指しているといわれています。イモリとヤモリは大変よく似ているため間違われる事も多いですが、人々を混乱させるという事は妖怪であるという一つの証でもありますよね？ Continue reading →

I mentioned the other day how the great Toriyama Sekien was a big fan of inventing yokai that poked fun at the red-light districts and the priest class of his day. (Readers may have noticed the sheer number of priest yokai in Night Parade — most of these originated from Toriyama.)
